RJ Andrews. I design charts, diagrams, and maps, and I study the history of information design.
I keep a working library of rare charts, maps, and atlases in Dogpatch, San Francisco: Playfair, Nightingale, Minard, the first shaded table, early supply-and-demand curves and Venn diagrams, statistical atlases, a shelf full of Isotype. I use it as a design reference and host visitors.
Wrote Info We Trust. Published beautiful monographs on Florence Nightingale, Emma Willard, and E.J. Marey via Visionary Press. Made daily Covid graphics for the White House in 2020. Started out at the MIT Media Lab, then academic medicine.
I work on dbt Charts (dbtcharts.com), so weigh anything I say about BI and charting tools accordingly.
